Because they Could / U.S.A
Editor: Anna Barsan
Director: Kate Levy
Documentary Feature (currently in post-production)

During Detroit's municipal bankruptcy, Detroit Public School students and Detroit pensioners fight mass water shutoffs, school closings, and home displacement--devastating manifestations of political narratives that cast African American leaders as corrupt, and blame them for insolvency in an economy stacked against them. Shot over five years and produced in deep collaboration with Detroit community organizers and residents, Because they Could portrays the resiliency of these long-term Detroiters as they subvert racist narratives and create alternatives to exploitative economic systems.
