Long-term Detroiters resist mass water shutoffs, school closings, pension cuts and home displacement under a state-imposed suspension of democracy. Shot over five years in deep collaboration with Detroit community organizers and residents, Because they Could exposes the inequity of regional power structures and the resiliency of long-term Detroiters as they create alternatives to exploitative economic conditions.
